Hi, Tam and I (I’m Di, by the way) travel all over Europe in our motorbarge “Friesland”. We cruise the great network of interconnected canals and rivers which stretches from the English Channel, down to the Mediterranean, and all the way across to the Black Sea. These are the inland waterways of mainland Europe


As the name of my website suggests, our travels are largely determined by two abiding interests - food and wine. (Oh, and beer if we are up in Belgium). I hope you will enjoy life in our “ditch crawling” world as we slowly make our way across the Continental landscape. We want to share with you our encounters with wine growers, cheese makers and the lady who feeds the ducks which produce the foie gras. I’ll tell you about the “food for free” I gather along the towpath. I’ll introduce you to the secrets of the charcuterie and I’ll probably bore you to tears with my passion for markets and the growers of good food and wine.


Our inland voyage has no ending - there is no final port to head for - or at least not just yet. We may stop somewhere for a day and it could turn into a year. How long depends on what we find to interest us. But always the day will come when we will feel the urge to move on, knowing that something new lies just beyond that next bend in the river. On the other hand we love coming back to the familiar places. We look forward to revisiting that odd little restaurant down on the river-bank where they tell you exactly what you are going to eat that evening, or stocking up with more of that very nice man’s champagne when we pass his vineyard and I get quite broody if we don’t, every so often, stop off at that village where the pig farmer comes in to market with the best boudin noir I have ever tasted,


So if the idea of pottering along the watery highways and byways of Europe appeals, and if the thought of tracking down particular foods and wines at source, sampling some of the old traditional dishes in out-of-the-way places and discovering, en route, new ways of cooking, as well as new things to cook, seems like a good idea - then let’s get started right away.


On this site you will find articles about our life on a barge, our travels, the people we meet, the places we visit and about anything else that has happened to take my fancy. There’s a page about us and once we get moving you will find our day-to-day barging blog. Of course there are some recipes, but only ones that directly relate to what we are doing and when we are doing it - you’ll see what I mean as we get into this thing. There will be all the usual stuff - about wine, restaurants, markets, as well as a frequently updated list of my secret ingredients etc., but all tried, tested and written about, from hopefully, a slightly uncommon perspective.
